How we calculate

How our tools work out their answers, and where the numbers come from.

How our tools work

Each tool takes the numbers you enter and applies published rules, fees or rates to them, one step at a time. Where it helps, the result shows every step, so you can see exactly how the answer was reached. All calculations run in your browser; nothing you type is sent to us.

Tool by tool

Freelancer Take-Home Calculator (Pakistan)

Starts with what the client pays in US dollars, then takes off the platform fee (Upwork’s fee for your contract, or Fiverr’s 20%), each route’s withdrawal or transfer fee, the gap between the market exchange rate and the rate each route really gives you, and the final tax on IT export income (0.25% if you are registered with PSEB, 1% if not). Routes are ranked by how many rupees reach your bank.

Time Card Calculator

For each shift, the calculator takes the end time minus the start time. If the end is earlier than the start, the shift is treated as ending the next day. Unpaid break minutes are then taken off, unless you untick “Deduct breaks”. If you choose rounding, each clock-in and clock-out time is first rounded to the nearest 5, 6 or 15 minutes (exactly half rounds up), and the shift is worked out from the rounded times.

Daily totals are added up for the week, then split into regular time and overtime using the rule you pick: weekly (over 40 hours, US federal), daily (over 8 hours), or California (over 8 hours a day or 40 a week at 1.5 times, and over 12 hours a day at double time). If you work all seven days of the week, the seventh day follows California’s seventh-day rule: its first 8 hours are overtime and any hours over 8 are double time. Weekly overtime is never counted twice. If you add an hourly rate, gross pay is regular hours × rate, plus overtime hours × rate × your overtime multiplier (1.5 unless you change it). Taxes and deductions are not included.

How often we check

We recheck every rate, fee and rule at least once a month, and again after any announced change, such as a new budget or a platform fee update. Each change is recorded in the update log below.

Results are estimates

Our results are estimates for information only. Your exact amount can differ because of your account type, the timing of a payment, or rules that apply only to you. Always check important numbers with the official source before you act on them.

Report a mistake

If a number looks wrong or out of date, please tell us on our contact page and choose “Report a wrong number”. We check every report.
